How much does a portrait cost? Prices vary by size, medium, and the complexity of the picture such as the number of figures ant type of background. Prices start at $125 for a pencil portrait, 8" x 10" with one figure.
What media should I choose? Consider how much you want to spend, whether you like (or dislike) glass over the picture, and whether it will need to be shipped somewhere. Pencil drawings are less expensive because they take less time. If you don't want glass over the picture, oil is the way to go, but takes longer between painting time and drying time. Pastel is a great way to show an animals fur, the work goes a little faster, but it does require the protection of glass in the frame, and is harder to ship without damage.
Does the background make a difference in the price? A simple tonal background would be least expensive while an elaborate landscape takes more time and would cost somewhat more. However, the most important factor is how you want your painting to look.
Can I have more than one figure in the portrait? Yes you can, but it will cost a bit more.
Is it better to show the whole horse (or pet) or just the head? It is a personal choice. An animal with perfect confirmation or great action would be a beautiful full figure portrait. An appealing face, beautiful eyes, or endearing expression is a great candidate for a close-up of the head.
How long will it take/Can I get it by Christmas? It normally takes 2 to 3 months to complete a commission, depending on how many I'm working on. I recommend you plan ahead, or consider a gift certificate which would also give the recipient input into the process. In the case of oil paintings it takes several months for them to dry completely after they are finished.
